Just six months after it opened its doors for the first time, Reigate Community Centre has been given a civic award.
It was one of just four buildings to be awarded for its contribution to the local area by The Reigate Society at its annual awards ceremony on Monday evening.
After 10 years of planning and fundraising by members of Reigate Methodist Church, Reigate Community Centre opened for business in April and is now home to many local groups and clubs. “The result is a most attractive building which works well with the existing church internally and externally, both complementing and contrasting with it architecturally,” said Reigate Society chairman, Alan Mortlock.
Reigate Methodist Church Minister, Rev Clive McKie, was delighted with the award. “It is wonderful that the Reigate Society has recognised the contribution that the new Community Centre makes to the town of Reigate,” he said. “Its attractiveness as a building is thanks to our architect, Ralph Ball, of Charter Design Associates, and Reigate–based builders, Hystar. The Community Centre is a credit to the faith and tireless, fundraising efforts of church members, and the work of our development team which managed the project, especially the late Professor Ernest Shannon who sadly died last month.”
